Beef up restraining orders: Women's group

ABC November 3, 2009, 7:09 pm

A women's advocacy group has called for mandatory reviews into deaths which occur as a result of domestic violence.

A Perth man has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a 26 year minimum for murdering his former partner.

The woman had taken out numerous violence restraining orders against him.

The victim's family says she had complained to police about his behaviour less than two days before her death, and they feel let down by the authorities.

Angela Hartwig from the Womens Council for Domestic and Family Violence Services says without tougher penalties and a more consistent approach to enforcing the restraining orders they will not be effective.

"There is a lack of consistency still, so I think that's an ongoing issue that we need to keep on the agenda in terms of police response," she said.

"Until women are believed, until we have a system that puts the safety of women and children first, with any response, then we will have deaths that could be prevented."

Tougher enforcement</h3>;

The Premier, Colin Barnett, has flagged tougher enforcement of violence restraining orders.

Mr Barnett says the Attorney General is reviewing the application and enforcement of violence restraining orders.

"I think out of that case and others like it we need to have perhaps greater enforcement and if people breach it maybe they've got to be charged," he said.
