A search is under way in Victoria's alpine region for a missing man and teenage girl.

The 31-year-old man and 15-year-old girl went missing at Mount Bogong yesterday afternoon and used their mobile phone to call for help.

Police have used the signal from the mobile phone to narrow down the search area.

The girl's father, who had been hiking with the pair but became separated yesterday afternoon, made his way back to his car this morning.

Search and Rescue Squad police from Melbourne will go to the scene this morning to assist in the search.

Police say the missing pair had some equipment including sleeping bags, a tent, and some water and biscuits.
