Today is the last time the ACT will have a public holiday on Melbourne Cup day.
The ACT Government announced in August that Family and Community Day would no longer take place on Melbourne Cup day.
The move has won support from the business community which has opposed the holiday since it was introduced in 2007.The ACT Chamber of Commerce argued that declaring the Tuesday a holiday has encouraged workers to take a four-day weekend.
From next year, Family and Community Day will be celebrated on the first Monday of the September-October school holidays.
