The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has checked that water from fighting a blaze at an Adelaide waste dump did not reach wetlands.

Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) crews were called to the Wingfield Waste and Recycling Centre in Hanson Road at about 7:30pm ACDT on Monday and managed to contain the fire by 9:00pm.

It took them another six hours to extinguish the blaze.

Investigators went to the scene this morning but were unable to determine a cause of the fire, which left a damage bill of about $200,000.

MFS acting commander Peter Mason says the EPA was notified of the risk that contaminated water could get into wetlands.

"Our concern at the moment is the water run-off because it'd be very polluted so the EPA have been notified of that. The water would go into the wetlands here and that's a concern of ours," he said.

The EPA's investigation found that run-off did not reach the nearby Barker wetlands.

A recent blaze at a Kilburn recycling plant did result in polluted water reaching the wetlands.
