The arrival of two new carriers, one of which is world's biggest airline, will boost tourism and is a vote of confidence in the nation's biggest travel gateway, the head of Sydney Airport says.
The entry of Tiger Airways and Delta Air Lines on Friday into the Sydney market is good news for tourism, said Sydney Airport chief executive Russell Balding.
"Sydney Airport is a major contributor to Sydney's economy and the arrival of two new carriers is very good news for all those people employed in Sydney's tourism, hospitality, and related industries," Mr Balding said.Delta, which is the world's largest airline, will offer flights from Sydney to Los Angeles, while Tiger will fly the Sydney-Melbourne route.
Delta's entrance into the Australian market would encourage overseas tourists and Tiger's inclusion in Australia's domestic busiest route would be a big win for local tourism, Mr Balding said."Sydney is Australia's biggest tourist attraction and the extra choice Tiger Airways provides will give people from Melbourne an extra reason to visit Sydney," he said.
