Prepare for storm, SES warns

The West Australian June 28, 2009, 1:15 pm

Residents in the Perth metropolitan area, South-West and Great Southern are urged to prepare for "another bad storm" today.

The worst of the front is likely to hit the South-West after noon and the Perth metro area between 8pm and 9am tomorrow.

The storm is expected to bring dangerous weather that could damage people's homes and make travel unsafe.

The State Emergency Services suggests that people close their curtains and blinds and stay inside away from windows.

"If caught outside find safe shelter away from trees, powerlines, stormwater drains and streams," the SES said.

Motorists are urged to take extra care on the roads.

"Slow down, turn your lights on and keep a safe distance from other drivers," the SES said.

"If it is raining heavily and you cannot see, pull over and park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears.

"If there is flooding, do not drive into water of unknown depth and current."

People who have been affected by a storm and need help should call the SES on 132 500.

SES volunteers have received 37 calls for help across Perth and the South-West following the stormy weather since Friday night.

Nine calls for help came from Bunbury, which was battered by a tornado nine days ago.

Meanwhile the majority of calls for help in the Perth metro area came from Rockingham with five calls and Melville with four calls.

The majority of calls have involved minor roof damage.
