Powderfinger have headed into the studio to record their seventh album.

The Brisbane rock band started work on the follow up to Dream Days at the Hotel Existence on Monday, and hope to release a new album by the end of the year.

"We have been busy writing for the last five months, and I have to say, we are pretty damn excited heading into the studio with our old friend, producer Nick DiDia," guitarist Darren Middleton wrote on the band's website.

"The demos are vibing and full of life, and we hope to carry on from there."

DiDia produced their most popular albums, Internationalist, Odyssey Number 5 and Vulture St.
