Prison van death guards lose their jobs

The West Australian June 19, 2009, 1:45 pm

Graham Powell and Nina Stokoe, the two security guards who transported an Aboriginal elder who died in the back of a prison van they were driving, have lost their jobs.

The pair, employed by security company G4S have had their work permits revoked by the WA Department of Corrective Services.

G4S public affairs director Tim Hall said the two were told on Monday that they no longer had jobs with the company.

Prior to their dismissal, Mr Powell and Ms Stokoe were on suspension following an inquest into the death of Mr Ward, the Aboriginal elder who died of heat stroke while being transported 360km in stifling conditions in the back of a prison van.

Last Friday, State Coroner, Alistair Hope found the pair had failed in their duty of care.
