A 76-year-old North Perth man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court over the death of his 83-year-old neighbour.

Tibor Zoltan Makowas charged with grievous bodily harm last night after his neighbour was found dead in his Mabel Street flat yesterday morning.

The court was told the charge could be upgraded following the results of a post-mortem examination.

Mr Mako was remanded in custody and is next due to appear in the Stirling Gardens Magistrate's Court on July 1.

Yesterday, Det-Sen. Const. Matthew Donkin said Mr Makocalled policeconcerned about the welfare of his neighbour, who lived alone in the same block of public housing flats.

Police allege Mr Mako was involved in an argument with his neighbour.

He had gone voluntarily with detectives to be interviewed about the death.

Sen. Const. Donkin said there were no witnesses to the man's death and neighbours had not reported hearing or seeing anything unusual on Monday night.

He said the victim had lived in the flats for about two months.

Mabel Street resident Banjiy Mistlis, 71, said she had spoken to the victim on Monday morning.

She described him as a pleasant, well-liked man and said he had been dressed up ready for an outing when she saw him.

Jeannie Papadopolous, who lives next door to the flats, said the residents were usually quiet. She and her husband had not been aware of any unusual noises on Monday night.

"It is just very surprising to see that the police are here and it's sad someone has died," she said.
