Fire forces highway closure, caravan park evacuation

The West Australian June 11, 2009, 1:45 pm

A fire at a shed attached to a petrol station in the State's North-West literally stopped traffic and forced the evacuation of guests at a caravan park yesterday afternoon.

The blaze in the 40m by 40m shed attached to BP service station on Great Northern Highway in Port Hedland caused the highway to close for more than an hour.

Damaged has been estimated at $1.5 million.

The fire started when workmen refurbishing the shed tried to cut a shelf using welding equipment and sparks got into the spray-on insulation.

Firefighters took just over two hours to get the fire under control.

Crews also relocated people from the nearby caravan park for three hours while the fire got under control.
