Alternative recycling plans have been put into place days after a massive blaze destroyed a major recycling plant in Canning Vale.
The Southern Metropolitan Regional Council's recycling plant in Canning Vale was destroyed in the Monday fire. The plant took recycling waste from seven southern suburbs councils.
All recycling collected in Kwinana will be processed at a facility in Mandurah.More than half of recyclables collected from Melville and Canning will be processed at facilities in Bayswater and Maddington.
Meanwhile, East Fremantle does not have a recycling collection this week but from next week the waste will be processed in Maddington.Households in the region of the Canning Vale centre are being urged to continue sorting their rubbish as both the waste composting and green waste processing plants on the RRRC site have been unaffected by the blaze.
SMRC chairman Doug Thompson said the council was in negotiations with two companies to provide recycling processing until the Canning Vale plant's future was determined."Unfortunately the lack of capacity in Perth's recycling industry means we cannot prevent some recyclables from ending up in landfill," Cr Thompson said.
"We do not wish the community's recycling efforts to be lost, starting next week the SMRC will spread what spare capacity there is among all our member councils equally."Unfortunately the lack of capacity in Perth's recycling industry means we cannot prevent some recyclables from ending up in landfill."
