Essendon coach Matthew Knights has pledged there'll be no letdown for the Bombers in Friday night's blockbuster against Collingwood coming off last week's demolition of Carlton.

Speaking at Windy Hill on Tuesday, Knights described his team's 69-point thumping of the Blues as its most complete performance of the season.

"I think it's the first time we've been able to keep the pressure on the opposition for the entire game and at the same time continue to use our offensive weapons when we have the ball," said Knights.

"We kicked 21 goals and kept Carlton to nine so we've done it both ways probably for the first time over the four quarters (this season)."

"Whether that's a one-off is the challenge for this group."

Asked whether it had been difficult to keep expectations in check this week, Knights said he only needs to invoke the memory of last season's run of eight consecutive losses to stay grounded.

"I wouldn't have thought there was an issue with this playing group getting ahead of themselves," he said.

"We're seven-and-six, sitting seventh on the ladder - I don't think that's anything to write home about."

Knights said the Essendon match committee would be putting plenty of thought into getting the match-ups right on Friday night in light of the outstanding recent form of Collingwood's prime movers Dane Swan and Alan Didak.

He agreed that Andrew Welsh, among Essendon's best in his two outings since his comeback from a dislocated ankle, would be a leading candidate for the job on Didak who has enjoyed career-best stats for three-weeks in a row.

"The great thing about Collingwood is that they've got a lot of those players who are creative geniuses in a lot of ways," said Knights.

"Alan Didak, Dane Swan, Leon Davis - they do make something out of nothing, so that's why they're a pretty dangerous football side."

Quizzed about media reports that he was set to be offered a contract extension with 18 months still to run on his existing agreement, Knights said he'd had no contact yet with the club.

"My role is to coach the team and that's what I'm concentrating on and the things behind the scenes with my contract, my manager will deal with that and I don't really get involved," he said.

"Either the board wants you to carry out a vision and they'll come and speak to you or they won't - that's the way I treat things."
