The All Whites were simply outclassed in their opening match of the Confederations Cup in South Africa, going down to Spain 5-0.

New Zealand's near heroics against Italy less than a week ago, when they lost 4-3, have been long forgotten after being totally outplayed by the world's top ranked team.

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres had a hat-trick within the opening 17 minutes as Spain dominated play with 66 percent of possession in the opening half.

Torres opened the scoring in just the second minute putting a brilliantly placed shot past New Zealand keeper Glen Moss.

Torres grabbed a second in the 14th minute after some slick passing by the Spaniards showed their supreme skill as the All Whites defenders could just stand a watch.

Torres capped off his hat-trick with a header in the 17th minute.

More crisp passing in the 24th minute set up Spain's fourth as Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas scored just his second international goal.
New Zealand were lucky the scoreline wasn't more as Spain blew a few more chances before the break.

Spain added a fifth not long into the second half after a defensive lapse by Andy Boyens. Boyens missed a clearance with the ball going straight through his legs and to the feet of David Villa who scored from close range.

The All Whites looked more settled in the second half and can take some comfort that they only conceded one goal after the 25 minute mark.

In an earlier match between the other two teams from New Zealand's pool, Iraq and South Africa played out a 0-0 draw.
New Zealand's next game is against South Africa on Thursday morning.
