Sea level a concern for St Helens development

Conservationists on Tasmania's east coast are concerned about a proposed commercial development on the foreshore at St Helens.

The State Government has been approached about the use of Crown Land for the project, but is remaining tight-lipped about exactly what it is.

There is speculation it is a restaurant and accommodation development.

The Greens have raised concerns about the plan and a confidential item is listed for today's Break O'Day Council meeting.

Todd Dudley from the North East Bioregional Network is disappointed the community has been kept in the dark.

"Mainly that there isn't really a long term plan for the area and the other thing is that council seems to be negotiating with the State Government without telling the local community what is going on," he said.

"And also from a sea level rise point of view I don't think it would be a good place to be siting development."

A spokesman for the Crown Lands Minister, David Llewellyn, says it is normal procedure for the government to consider an application before it goes to council.

He says if approved, it would then go through normal council planning requirements, precluding the possibility of any 'secret deals'.
