Laughing in the face of diabetes

Humour is the latest weapon in the battle against the scourge of diabetes.

Diabetes Tasmania has launched an advertising campaign that highlights the prevalance of the lifestyle-related disease.

The group's chief executive, Caroline Wells, says every day seven Tasmanians are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, which can have acute complications.

"Poor blood flow to extremities so peripheral neuropathy which can lead to amputations, gangrene those sort of things, blindness are significant complications of the disease. heart disease is a particularly significant one and kidney disease," she said.

Ms Wells says they are trying a new campaign.

"This campaign is very non judgemental, diabetes does effect people that are not necessarily your stereotypical overweight people that develop type 2," she said.

"So this campaign is engaging it is there to make people think and say 'yes, I should go to my GP and have a test."
