Lobby group questions climate change Budget allocation

The ACT Conservation Council has questioned the Government's spending on climate change initiatives.

This week's Budget includes $100 million over five years for climate change, but council spokeswoman Genevieve Wauchope says only $8 million has been committed to programs that will actually reduce carbon emissions.

She says almost $70 million has been allocated to the fifth year, outside the four-year Budget cycle.

Ms Wauchope says the Government is including tree planting among its climate change initiatives, when it should be spending that money on programs to reduce emissions like sustainable transport and energy efficiency measures.

"Planting trees is great, we would never say 'don't plant trees', but you need to look really carefully about how you're doing that," she said.

"It's just not a climate change measure. If you want to address climate change, you stop those emissions going out into the atmosphere in the first place."
