Victoria's Police Commissioner Christine Nixon has indicated she may resign when her current contract expires.
Ms Nixon, the state's top cop for seven years, has told Sky News that "people can sometimes stay too long", and "you can never go too early in that sense".
"It is a matter for determining where I'm up to, and where Victoria Police are at the time," Ms Nixon said.
"But it has been an amazing experience."
Ms Nixon is believed to have only one year left on her contract.
Her position has been under increasing pressure in recent months, with calls from the police union for her to resign.
In April, a Herald Sun survey showed of the almost 3,500 officers who responded, only 31 per cent were positive about the job Ms Nixon had done.
Victoria Police Union chief Paul Mullett then described her position as "virtually untenable", amid a debate over police resources.
At the time, Ms Nixon said she had no intention of quitting.
"When I resign it will be because I believe I've done the best I can do and I'll move on to do something else, but that's not today," she said.
"This is about a game of power. This is about attempting to get someone like me, who's about change, who I think has strong support within the community.
