League legend Gibson dies

Australian rugby league's coach of the century, Jack Gibson, has passed away following a long battle with illness.

Gibson, who was being treated at a Sydney nursing home for Alzheimer's Disease and dementia since 2006, was 79 years old.

His wife Judy said in a statement the family appreciates the care he received in the nursing home, and the support given to the family.

"We are dealing as well as we can and would ask that Jack's many friends in their sadness that he is no longer with us, do not feel too sorry," she said.

"Jack would not want that; it was his own strong belief and appreciation that he had had a very fortunate life, and we know he would have wanted that to be the spirit of this time."

Gibson coached Parramatta to three consecutive premierships between 1981 and 1983, also winning back to back premierships with the Roosters (1974, 1975).

The former Eastern suburbs, Newtown and Wests forward was named coach of the century at rugby league's centenary year celebrations last month.

ABC Grandstand commentator David Morrow says Gibson's passing is very sad for all who follow rugby league.

"He was a very generous man and it always I think shows up when players that played under Jack always talk about the generosity of the man and obviously he was a wonderful spirit," he said.

New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma has also praised Gibson's achievements.

Mr Iemma says his influence on the game is immeasurable and every fan of rugby league will feel sad for his passing.
