Protocol to address tourism racism

The Northern Territory's anti-discrimination commissioner, Tony Fitzgerald, says he is working on a protocol for accommodation providers to avoid racism in the tourism industry.

The protocol is in response to a case in April where Aboriginal women were asked to leave a backpacker hostel.

Mr Fitzgerald says he is working with accommodation providers in central Australia on the protocol, which will be handed out to all guests.

He says the protocol could be used across the Northern Territory.

"A couple of years ago we had a similar complaint from an establishment in Darwin who had promised some Aboriginal women a discount and they not only revoked the discount but charged them more on the basis that [they] were Indigenous and supposedly dirty in their habits," he said.

"It's not something that's isolated."
