An 11-month-old boy from Adelaide has been admitted to hospital with invasive meningococcal disease.
The toddler is in a satisfactory condition.
The health department has identified approximately 17 contacts, four of which have been directed to receive medical assessments and antibiotics.
Information about meningococcal has been distributed to all contacts.
It's the third case of the disease reported in South Australia this year, and compares to two cases at the same time last year.
Sixteen cases were reported in 2007.
