Mobile calls to rise on Mother's Day

Mobile phone carriers are expecting a spike in calls this Sunday as children across the country contact their mums.

Telstra said it was expecting a high volume of text messages and calls.

"Mother's Day is one of our busiest days and the number of voice and video calls, text messages and picture messages continues to grow each year," Telstra segment executive director Ms Keleher said.

"Last year, over 15 million text messages were sent on Telstra's networks for Mother's Day, and this year, Telstra is expecting more than 21 million text messages will be sent to mums across Australia," Ms Keleher said.

"There were over 6.5 million mobile calls made last Mother's Day and this year we're expecting that number to grow to over 7.5 million."

A spokeswoman from 3 Mobile said that while Mother's Day isn't as big as Christmas Day or New Year's Eve, the telco certainly experienced an increase in SMS text messages and multimedia messages.
