Wilderness tourism project stalled

Tasmania's Pumphouse Point development has taken another set back, with conservationists lodging an appeal against the Central Highlands Council's approval of the project.

The council voted in favour of Simon Currant's proposal for a restaurant and lodge to built at the former Hydro Electric Commission substation on the banks of Lake St Clair.

The two week period to appeal the decision ended yesterday and the Resource Planning and Development Commission received one objection - from the National Parks Association.

The Association's spokesman, Robert Campbell, says the appeal disputes the location of the development.

"We're just calling on Simon Currant and his associates to just move the facility outside the national park, we support the types of tourist facilities he's proposing it's just the siting of the development within the national park," he said.

Mr Campbell says they are prepared to keep fighting the development because it would be in a World Heritage Area.

"The next step will be a mediation process and then if that doesn't work then there will actually be a tribunal hearing when each party will be able to put their arguments."
