1.2 million take a dive in Queensland
New figures show more than 1.2 million visitors went snorkelling or scuba diving in the last 12 months during their holidays in Queensland.
Just over half of those were international visitors and 44 percent of them were first time divers.
Most were not certified divers and their dive was part of an organised activity from a boat.
Unsurprisingly, the research also showed international visitors most commonly undertook their diving experience in Tropical North Queensland.
For many international visitors, a Great Barrier Reef experience is a must-do activity on their Australian visit, Queensland Tourism Minister Desley Boyle said.
Ms Boyle said travellers who participated in recreational diving or snorkelling tended to stay longer.
Longer staying travellers benefit the region economically and strengthen our reputation as a quality diving destination, and even more importantly, one with high safety standards, Ms Boyle said. - Travelpress travel news
