Late Qld medico honoured for cancer research

A Queensland medical researcher who helped develop the world's first cervical cancer vaccine will be honoured at a memorial service at Parliament House in Brisbane today.

Former colleague, Professor Ian Frazer, says Dr Jian Zhou who died in 1999, played a vital role in the local scientific and medical community.

"I think that he'd be very excited to see the work that he'd put in some 15 years ago had lead to something so important in society and the vaccine's helped prevent cervical cancer," he said.

"Fortunately he was able to see at least some evidence that the vaccine was going to work before he passed away in 1999."
