WA pushing for health warnings on alcohol packaging

Western Australia will call for mandatory health warnings on alcohol packaging, at a meeting of the nation's food regulation ministers in Melbourne today.

The Prime Minister and state premiers asked the council to consider the mandatory warnings at the last Council of Australian Governments meeting in March.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health, John Hyde, says he will call for simple, effective labelling on all alcohol packaging.

"We need a simple labelling on the package that enables people who are in a crowded pub or are rushing through a takeaway alcohol shop to make an informed decision about the alcohol that they're wanting to purchase," he said.
