Too cold for some in sunny Qld

A cold snap in the Sunshine State appears to have caught some of the wildlife off guard.

At Applethorpe on Queensland's Granite Belt, the temperature got down to -2 degrees Celsius this morning.

Brian Berry, a farmer at Crow's Nest on the Darling Downs, says the cold is even too much for the birds.

"When I got up this morning it was just slightly crispy on the grass but I checked the weather and it was [minus] 1.4," he said.

"The magpies wandered down and here they were standing on one leg and then changing legs because one foot was getting too cold."

Forecasters say it will be a degree or two warmer today than yesterday's record cold snap in parts of southern Queensland, but it will still be very chilly.

The weather bureau's Craig Mitchell says many centres are up to 11 degrees below average.

"Warwick was once again relatively cool, not as cold as yesterday at this time - 0.8, Dalby 1.5, St George 1.1 and Roma 0.5 - so those centres would be looking at a little bit of frost around the general area," he said.
