More say for SA: Murray expert

A leading Adelaide water expert says South Australia should have more input over the management of water from the Murray-Darling Basin.

University of Adelaide Professor Mike Young will join more than 250 delegates at a national three-day water summit in Sydney from today.

The summit will be led by Federal Water Minister Penny Wong and will discuss a number of issues including the Memorandum of Understanding between governments, which is due to be finalised in July.

Professor Young this will be one of the last public chances to debate the contents of the Memorandum.

"In particular for South Australia we understand the importance not only of an MOU but also re-negotiating the Murray-Darling Basin agreements," he said.

"In the regime that I'm talking about they would always be allowed to choose between using water, selling water or saving water, and saving water in times of adversity makes sense, we all know that."
