WA youth affairs group calls for 'alcopop' ban

The WA Youth Affairs Council says 'alcopop' drinks should be taken off the market to prevent the heavy drinking culture among teenagers.

A new survey by the Australian Institute of Health shows that 14 to 19-year-old girls are among the country's worst binge drinkers.

And more than 28 per cent of that group put themselves at risk through their drinking at least once a month.

Overnight the Federal Government increased the tax on pre-mixed drinks, which means they will now cost between 30 cents and $1.30 more a bottle, depending on alcohol content.

The council's executive officer, Lisa Laschon, says the Government should ban the drinks.

"Young people aren't actually aware of the high alcohol levels of the pop drinks that they're drinking," she said.

"They're just drinking until they are absolutely drunk, to the point of vomiting, to the point of not being able to stand on their own two feet.

"The fact that they can't actually taste the alcohol in the beverages ... we think this should really be taken very seriously by the manufacturers."
