A Brisbane lawyer is leading a new push to provide affordable housing across Queensland.
Heather Watson from the Queensland Community Housing Coalition is building a consortium of housing organisations, councils, developers and bankers to provide cheap accommodation.
Ms Watson says the units will be built in towns and cities with a severe shortage of low cost living.
She says the proposed consortium will be a first for Australia.
"The coalition has identified a number of hotspots, Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Hervey Bay, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and the Gold Coast," she said.
"Its being treated as a pilot project and if successful we are hoping this will be a model for further developments.
"The main issue with this particular initiative is that it is being approached on a collaborative basis, it's not just single interests that are being combined.
