The resignation today of the Alfred Hospital's Head of Trauma Surgery has been followed by a Victorian Opposition call for a judicial inquiry into the matter.
Professor Thomas Kossmann was accused of rorting government payments for accident victims and conducting unnecessary surgery on patients.
He resigned before the release of a report into the allegations.
The Victorian Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu says there are claims Professor Kossmann made false representations to become head of the Alfred's trauma unit.
Mr Baillieu says a judicial inquiry of surgical accreditation is needed.
"There are allegations that he misrepresented his credentials in seeking that accreditation and there are now allegations that he misrepresented his credentials in his declaration to the government," he said.
Professor Kossmann has denied any wrong-doing and says he has been the victim of a witch hunt.
"The past six months, my family and I have been subjected to a process that can only be described as un-Australian," he said.
"Those who have sought to destroy my career have not come up with a single patient or loved one to support their claims."
