Churches to hold rail crash memorial service

Churches in Kerang are to hold a joint memorial service for the 11 victims of the Victorian rail disaster on Sunday.

Emergency crews worked through the night to remove what was left of the semi-trailer from the level-crossing in the state's north-west.

Clearing the wreckage of the train and repairing the track to allow the line to reopen is expected to take several more days.

Several of those killed in the accident, on Tuesday afternoon, have now been identified.

They include 79-year-old grandmother Jean Webb, from Swan Hill, and New Zealander Nicholas Parker, 32.

The youngest victim was 13-year-old Matthew Stubbs, also from Swan Hill.

Rose McMonnies, 17, from Robinvale, died alongside her father Geoff. Her 15-year-old sister Sharice remains in a critical condition in hospital.

New South Wales nurse Stephanie Meredith, from Balranald, and her daughters Danielle and Chantelle were also killed.

Five people who were seriously injured in the collision are still in a critical condition in Melbourne hospitals.
