"I thought we were gone, I though we were definitely going to flip," one passenger said.
Rod Knight was one of the first on the scene. "I was just basically trying to get people out who could get out but you can't get people out who are caught in twisted metal," he said. "Hopefully they'll fix this railway crossing up, because there's just going to be more people killed the way it's going." Victorian Premier Steve Bracks visited the scene and offered his condolences. "It's a horrific site, it's a tragedy," he said. "Obviously it's a site which will take some time to investigate." The Victorian Government said it is too early to speculate about whether boom gates at the crossing would have prevented the disaster.
